15 August 2019 – The Digital Investigations Conference (DIC) is truly a one-of-a-kind event. It is Switzerland’s only such conference that provides a platform for computer forensic experts, vendors, partners and sponsors working in digital investigations and e-Discovery.

It has become a four day event, featuring keynote addresses, detailed session presentations and a multitude of hand-on workshops to increase skills and to learn more about software and hardware solutions in the market. All in one place. You can get an idea of the breadth of coverage in the keynotes and sessions and workshops by pursuing the session agenda (click here) and the hands-on workshops by looking at the training days schedule (click here).

But one of its most compelling features is that it draws attendees from the world of academia, advisory services,  corporations, government agencies, law enforcement units, law firms, and military organizations. So you are able to view and discuss common digital investigation issues, and common digital investigation problems from multiple angles. And a speaker at one presentation session might simply be an audience member at another session but still contribute. So there is a high-level of “cross-talk”.

The event is organized by the brainiacs behind two very well know companies:

– Arina AG, a dominant reseller for globally leading products in the areas of digital forensics, mobile forensics, e-discovery, cybersecurity, data duplication systems and network forensics. They are the leader in the DACH region (Austria, Germany and Switzerland).

– Swiss FTS, the leading discovery management and litigation support organization focusing on the specific needs of the Swiss and European market.

Before we get to a few more details of the event itself, please watch our chats with Markus Mosca (founder/CEO of Arina) and Roman Locher (CTO of Arina), plus Mattias Aggeler, a partner with Swiss FTS.

In the following clip, Markus addresses:

1. the issue of “forensic readiness” – a phrase we hear all the time. Markus discusses who is ready and who is not ready.

2. the strengths of Arina in the marketplace, and what it provides its customers

3. what Arina does to educate the market on technological developments, via university programs and other venues

Roman follows up with discussions on:

1.  today’s forensic technologies and whether they meet market demands

2.  the spike in mobile forensics

3. the factors that will most influence digital investigations in the future:

• Big Data, where processing a petabyte is now standard. Can the technology scale?

• encryption

• the need for more qualified personnel

4. the benefit and high value of attending the Digital Investigations Conference

Swiss FTS is one of the world’s leading corporate investigations firms and its partners have been named amongst the leading digital forensics specialists. Swiss FTS assists some of the world’s largest law firms and organizations with eDiscovery and data hosting in complex cases relating to Fraud, Anti-Corruption, Anti-Trust Regulation Breaches, Arbitration and Litigation and other types of investigations.

In addition to its operations center in Switzerland, it has an operations and datacenter in Singapore to service its Asian clients.

In the following clip, Mattias Aggeler, a partner with Swiss FTS, discusses:

1. some of the risks in cloud solutions

2. the cautious adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning

3. the GDPR and data security

These were two jam-packed days of sessions and presentations, and workshops/training sessions: data privacy, digital analytics, extraction and decryption, forensics, GDPR, red team security testing, etc., etc. Obviously, in an event of this kind, it is difficult to comment on everything. As we noted, you can get a feel for the wide range of topics provided in this event by reading the conference agendas in the links at the start of this post.

But I do want to highlight two items: the keynotes and the other participating vendors.

THE KEYNOTES

The DIC keynotes just get better and better each year. On deck this year:

– The event kicked off with Ryan Costello (Head of Data Privacy Engagement Services at Prosearch Strategies). He focused on the plethora of mobile applications, geolocation tracking technologies, and mapping technologies that have turned every individual “into an earthbound astronaut”, with continuous meta-data and transactional information streaming from the phone in their pocket.

The video he used to introduce his keynote was quite well done. But then I had to say that because Ryan wrote the script and our team at Project Counsel Media produced it 🙂

– Ryan was followed by well-know expert Prof. Dr. Bruce Nikkel (Bern University of Applied Sciences). In his  talk he explained the most popular cyber-criminal methods of committing fraud online, and included some predictions of how cyber-fraud will evolve in the future.

– On the second day of sessions we had, quite literally, a “Legal 101” of digital investigations by none other that David Rosenthal (Counsel, Homburger AG) who many of our readers have worked with over the years. We have had the delight of working with him on two projects.

While other talks at DIC focused on what technology can do for you in e-discovery and digital investigations, David focused on what you are actually allowed to do, guiding attendees through the basic steps you need to undertake to comply with data protection law, what labor law requires you to do and how to deal with pitfalls such as the Swiss blocking statutes in cross-border e-discovery cases and investigations.
