20 May 2019 – The Digital Investigations Conference (DIC) is truly a one-of-a-kind event. It is Switzerland’s only such conference that provides a platform for computer forensic experts, vendors, partners and sponsors working in digital investigations and e-Discovery. It features keynotes and offers workshops to increase skills and to learn more about soft- and hardware solutions in the market.
The event focus hits everybody: academics, advisories, corporates, government, law enforcement, law firms, and military organizations and organized by the brainiacs behind two very well know companies:
– Arina AG, a dominant reseller for globally leading products in the areas of digital forensics, mobile forensics, e-discovery, cybersecurity, data duplication systems and network forensics. They are the leader in the DACH region (Austria, Germany and Switzerland).

Before we get to the event itself, here is part of our chat last year with Markus Mosca (founder/CEO) of Arina who gives a brief history of the company, and the purpose of the Digital Investigations Conference:
They have two jam-packed days. And, obviously, in an event of this kind, it is difficult to comment on everything. You can get a feel for the wide range of topics by reading the 2-day conference agenda (click here). So let me highlight just a few items:
The keynotes just get better and better each year. Who is on deck next month:
– The event kicks off with Ryan Costello (Head of Data Privacy Engagement Services at Prosearch Strategies). He’ll focus on the plethora of mobile applications, geolocation tracking technologies, and mapping technologies that has turned every individual “into an earthbound astronaut”, with continuous meta-data and transactional information streaming from the phone in their pocket.
– Ryan will followed by well-know expert Prof. Dr. Bruce Nikkel (Bern University of Applied Sciences). His talk will explains the most popular cyber-criminal methods of committing fraud online, and will include some predictions of how cyber-fraud will evolve in the future.
– On the second day of the session we have, quite literally, a “Legal 101” of digital investigations by none other that David Rosenthal (Counsel, Homburger AG) who many of us have worked with over the years. While other talks at DIC focus on what technology can do for you in e-discovery and digital investigations, David will focus on what you are actually allowed to do, guiding attendees through the basic steps you need to undertake to comply with data protection law, what labor law requires you to do and how to deal with pitfalls such as the Swiss blocking statutes in cross-border e-discovery cases and investigations.
And as far as the sessions themselves, it’s all there: data privacy, digital analytics, extraction and decryption, forensics, GDPR, red team security testing, etc., etc. They cover it all. The full agenda is here.

OH, AND A QUICK NOTE OF THE FABULOUS CONFERENCE VENUE: THE HOTEL BELVOIR
We attend 35-45 events/conferences every year and venues are always very important to us. The Hotel Belvoir is ranked as a 4 star “superior hotel” and it certainly is in every way. The hotel has 60 elegantly furnished guest rooms, all with fantastic views over Lake Zurich. And views off to the Alps. The food is absolutely exquisite and the restaurant venues, by themselves, fabulous: the full Belvoir restaurant, the sun terrace, the bar/lounge, all with views of the lake.
The meeting rooms have true “state of art technology” and can accommodate groups up to 300 people. On their web site the hotel boasts an all-encompassing service — “Everything from a single source” — and that is exactly what they execute. The conference team literally works with you from the idea, across their organization, and all the way to the implementation.
Service is always superb, from check-in to special requests (we had some printing and special courier services needs last year and they executed perfectly. Plus, they have an excellent IT staff.
Added pluses: the Belvoir Wellness, Gym & Beauty centre … and Belvoir bowling. Really. The bowling is a brilliant side event.
So, if you are considering a Zurich location for a seminar, a meeting, or any event or celebration … or just a weekend “chill out” … I cannot think of a better location. And, no. This is not a paid endorsement. I do not do that sort of thing 🙂 We sincerely love the place.
